Westech Impactors are used in pharmaceutical to do various tests in relation to MDI, DPI and aerodynamic particle sizing tests.

8 stage non viable impactor is used in environmental testing to see, collect and test particulates in various stages of pollution matter such as tyre factory, cement factory, car pollution power station etc.
6 stage viable impactor is mainly used in laboratory work as well as hospital and general environment.
It comes with a smaller size pump and therefore it is good in testing buildings etc and rooms where it can be moved from one room to another.

DPI

A Dry Powder Inhaler (DPI) is designed to deliver a precise measured dose of medication by breath activation.
The test procedure measures aerodynamic particle size distribution of the drug leaving the device and can define the manner in which the aerosol deposits in the respiratory tract during inhalation. Aerosol characterization is often used in judging inhaler performance and is particularly relevant in the development of inhalation formulations during research, production, quality assurance and equivalency testing.
The results of characterizations using multi-stage cascade impaction techniques are used for the determination of fine particle fraction or fine particle dose which may be correlated to the dose or fraction of the drug penetrating the lungs during patient inhalation. Other instruments collect and measure doses per container.
Specified test applications and various systems described meet both the pharmaceutical industry and its legislators.

MDI

A metered dose inhaler (MDI) is most often a drug solution or suspension formulation and propellant. Designed to deliver a precise measured dose of medication under pressure, the devices have a long reliable history. The required test procedure measures aerodynamic particle size distribution of the drug leaving the device and can define the manner in which aerosols deposit in the respiratory tract during inhalation. Aerosol characterisation is often used in judging metered dose inhaler performance and is particularly relevant in the development of inhalation formulations during research, production, quality assurance and equivalency testing. The results of characterisations using multi-stage cascade impaction techniques are used for fine particle fraction or fine particle dose determination which may be correlated to the lung penetrating dose by the drug during inhalation. Other instruments collect and measure doses per container of a metered dose inhaler. Specified test applications described meet both the pharmaceutical industry and its legislators.

Environmental

Andersen cascade Impactors are also used for environmental studies and sampling. The particles size distribution of an ACI also allows you to compare the particulates to where they may be deposited in the lungs.

Non-viable ACIs for ambient air sample dry airborne particulates such as dust and other pollutants. The ACI has successively smaller holes and you go down the stages, the particles will impact onto the relevant plate and can then be analysed accordingly to the method and investigation.

Viable Andersen Cascade Impactors are used for sampling air containing bacteria or fungi. These use petri dishes containing an agar medium, the sample of air is drawn in, in which the corresponding particulates are collected at each stage on the agar medium. The Petri dishes are then removed, incubated and identified or counted or by an accepted method.
